ADOLF LOOS

Dear Sophie -

Here is some work from the Viennese architect and designer ADOLF LOOS.

We have to imagine what a dynamic center Vienna was during the early 20th century.  Austria was a major power and the home of great minds, including the psychoanalyst SIGMUND FREUD, the philosopher LUDWIG WITTGENSTEIN, and the composers GUSTAV MAHLER & ARNOLD SCHONBERG.

Wow.

With love,

Mom

JOSEF HOFFMAN

Dear Sophie -

Klimt's colleague in the formation of the Viennese Secession movement was the architect and designer JOSEF HOFFMAN.

Gorgeous, eh? Here you see the foundation of the modernist architectural language that follows for decades to come.

Mom

RUDOLF SCHINDLER

Dear Sophie -

Isn't Schindler swashbuckling dashing!!  RUDOLF SCHINDLER moved to Los Angeles from Vienna, Austria (first stopping in Chicago). He was at the forefront of the modernist movement and an idealist.  He built a home for 2 families with shared communal living spaces.  He loved the climate in LA and had outdoor bedrooms. (We can tour the house in West Hollywood!).

Before starting his own practice, he worked for FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT overseeing the construction of several projects. RICHARD NEUTRA came to live with him for a time and went from being a friend to a rival. Schindler never had the success that Neutra did, but left an equally important legacy.
