Dear Sophie -
Why is there a flag with a penis and a crown in the study? It is an artwork by MIKE KELLY who often uses familiar imagery with a twist to discuss a range of issues. Many of his sculptures use icons from childhood, such as sock monkeys and hand crocheted blankets. His prints have used images from the boys scouts for example, subverting traditional symbols of manhood.
I love this artist. He is funny as heck and profound at the same time. His exhibition of stuffed animals with the blankets was incredibly moving.
The Kelly flag never fails to make me smile. I apologize if it caused any trauma and I have a small fund set aside for therapy.
