Most ideas that are successful are ludicrously simple. Successful ideas generally have the appearance of simplicity because they seem inevitable." Artforum, 1967.
Dear Sophie -
SOL LEWITT was a conceptual and a minimalist artist. In direct contrast to an artist like Twombly, Lewitt didn't believe it was essential for the artist to execute their own works. In fact he often drafted explicit instructions for drawings to be carried out by others. The engagement of the artist was in the planning, not the execution.
His studio in New York was adjacent to EVA HESSE and they shared an important friendship.
With love,
Mom
