Post WWII sprang an art movement called ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM. It was bold and gestural. (Franz Kline, De Kooning) In Spain ANTONI TAPIES emerged using humble, natural materials such as sand, wood and paint with giant enveloping canvases and dense physicality.
There is a huge room filled with TAPIES canvases at the REINA SOFIA in Madrid that took my breath away. There is also a museum dedicated to his work in Barcelona.
