Dear Sophie -

GERRIT RIETVELD was an architect, designer and ardent member of the DE STIJL movement in the Netherlands.

The Rietveld Schroder house was a commission by Mrs. Schroder who lived there her whole adult life, from 1924 until 1985.  It may be visited in Utrect, a one hour ride from Amsterdam.

VAN RUISDAEL

Dear Sophie -

Whenever I see a low horizon line with a vast sky I think of Jacob Isaakszoon VAN RUISDAEL.

Van Ruisdael was a dutch painter who lived in Amsterdam (1628 - 1682). He studied with both his father and uncle who were artists and was accepted to a the guild at the age of 18.  He was surely an inspiration to the landscape painters who followed in the subsequent centuries.
