CONSTABLE, COROT & CHURCH

Dear Sophie -

Here are three landscape artists. What do they have in common?  Well, they are generally from the same time period, they each represent different regions in the world and each of their names conveniently starts with the letter "C".

JOHN CONSTABLE (1776 -1837) was an English ROMANTIC painter. Romanticism expressed itself in various forms including music, painting, literature and politics. Some composers include TCHAIKOVSKY, CHOPIN, SCHUBERT and the writers include BYRON, SHELLEY and KEATS.

JEAN-BAPTISTE-CAMILLE COROT (1796 -1875) was a French landscape painter, who to paraphrase a critic of the time was more interested in nymphs in the woods than peasants.  His work bridged the Old Masters to the IMPRESSIONISTS who would follow.

FREDERIC EDWIN CHURCH (1826 -1900) Was an American landscape painter, a Romantic and part of the HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL, the Romantic movement centered in New York. The influential American writers associated with the Romantics include THOREAU and EMERSON.

Phew!
