JOHN ENTENZA

JOHN ENTENZA

Dear Sophie -

JOHN ENTENZA was the editor of Arts & Architecture magazine and sponsored the CASE STUDIES HOUSE PROGRAM, enabling young architects to build their individual concepts for modern living.  The project spanned 20 years starting right at the end of WW2 through the 1960's.  Many of the houses still exist today and are scattered throughout Los Angeles.  Some of the architects that were included were RICHARD NEUTRA, CHARLES and RAY EAMES, SAARINEN, KOENIG and CRAIG ELLWOOD.  JULIUS SCHULMAN photographed them.

Entenza commissioned a small house from Saarinen which was adjacent to the Eames house in the Pacific Palisades.  It was a lovely scale with a meadow in between.   (I'm sad to say some knucklehead purchased it and built a giant box on the site.)
